THIS IS A FREE, EARLY DEVELOPMENT DEMO

GUAYOTA is a Top-Down Puzzle & Adventure video game where you take the role of a explorer that has to travel to a mysterious island.

Set in the Middle Ages and inspired by the Canary Islands native mythology, you will face mental and skill challenges with the only help of your torch. Keep its flame alive, or you will descend into madness...

About the Demo

What we offer here is a Early Development Demo that we have shown in many video game conferences across Spain from October to December. It doesn't shows the current state of the game, but it's a good way to taste what we want to offer.

The first demo shows part of the first temple you would explore in GUAYOTA, the Temple of Magec. We have included 4 levels out of 8 from this dungeon: The first three levels and the 7th one, to show you what challenges lie ahead in the final release.

We have been working hard the last year, and as a sample of that, we want to bring a demo with the same levels as the original 2019 one, but now reworked and enhanced, looking closer to what we expect to offer at release.

As part of this upgrade, you will find new:

  • 3D models and animations
  • New gameplay features
  • Lighting and post-process effects
  • Music and SFX
  • Automatic, seamless save game

We won't remove the original demo from itch.io, as we want to allow you to compare the changes we have made to the game in 2020.

Of course remember this is not totally representative of how the game will look eventually. You can check the list of things that we know we have to change or upgrade from the 2021 demo, in the Things we already know are not enterely fine >_< section below.

About the Project

Guayota began as a Final Project Master's Degree at the Complutense University of Madrid throughout 2019. With the first demo, we have received three awards the last year:

  • Most Innovative Game, at Playstation Talents 2019 Contest
  • Best Gameplay, at FIMP 2019 by AEVI (the Spanish Video Game National Association)
  • Best Game Audience Award at DevTalks 2019 by the European University of Madrid

We have been working hard since then and, as we wanted to make the game bigger and better, we have delayed its release date. For this reason, we now plan to finish the game later this year, aiming for a launch in early 2022 in PC online stores (TBD), and hopefully, on Nintendo Switch.

Things we already know are not enterely fine >_<

  • The player character picking animation doesn't take into account the height of the stuff it picks, so it will look like it's picking the items from the ground, not from the pedestals.
  • Some enviromental decoration, as the icicles or the columns over the walls, don't hide when the player is behind them.
  • We don't tell you in the demo when we are saving the game: It's every time you change a level.
  • We don't tell you that you can now move the camera around to easily watch what's going on in your surroundings in the level.
  • Sometimes the skip button from the opening cinematic doesn't skip it at all :_)
  • The ugly UI from the settings menu

If aside from these issues you find any bugs, or have any suggestions, please let us know in the comment section.

Looking forward to the full release, the puzzles are good, and I definitely want to see more of the story. :)

We really liked how you started to see connections between the symbols in the floor drawings with the ones at the doors :D

Thanks for playing, and we hope you find the story attractive in the final release ^^
